we love brixtonwe love brixton was there was there any like interestingbuilding techniques that went on in designing this build i think anytimeyou're approaching a winter village set the roofs they're something you're goingto think about quite a lot and every winter village set really doesi think do something different with the roofs so that was actually my startingpoint when i started designing the model i essentially did very basic shapeswith roofs draped over them just to see what would work and how icould get them to be easy to build and fun tobuild as well the building technique for this one it'spretty straightforward it it locks at the top and then underneaththe the two dormers hereand you can see right here that's actuallythis shows you i can pull it apart a bit so this pivots up andlocks it into place but uh these roofs generally were a lot of funto design so that's why i'm bringing them up nowbut another t hing that i would like to call attention to is theoctagonal design of these new 1x2 plates withthe rounded ends and by doing an octagonal layout herei've created a new take on a lego wreath yeah that looks amazing that looks sogood if you had to tell us like your favorite piece what would it beuh i think that there's quite a few things in herethat are fun and then i'm really pleased with how they turned outover here we have an observation deck with the telescope where the elves watchsanta fly off at night or watch for his returnupstairs we have a bedroom with a trick triple decker bedand one of the fun things about the bed is that itis actually mechanized meaning that it is possible towake the elves up just by shaking the bedand you do that by by turning the the clock hereso when it's time for them to get up and go to work you justyou just turn the clock and they all tumble out of bed it'sit's a bit of a rude awakening it's about to say don't comeshaking my bed in the morning no way forget thatand over here we have a tree because all of ourwinter village sets are defined by a new tree buildvery pleased with this one definitely this one is a tribute to my momwho is she's so into the holidays really and i wanted to make sure thatthe tree that i created for this set what was big and bushy and somethingshe'd actually be happy with oh that's a that's amazing man that isamazing uh i think the thing that i like thebest though is the waffle dispenser yeah i was gonnasay do you like waffles i think that's the question everybody's wanted to aski do and you know what i do like them a lotand i don't have them nearly enough so i don't know if i'm channeling somethinginto this but this is a little waffle dispenser thatdistributes one by one round tiles individually so you pull the lever andit drops down here into the pan i need one of those in myhouse i'd like to have one yeah uh presumablythe elves eat them along with maybe feeding them to the re indeer rulingbrixton right now um right so so talk to us is there anyeaster eggs as well in this build i think this is probablythe the biggest easter egg and this is actuallya little call back to my past as a as an a fall yeah before i joinedligo i became known for building small computers so when i got to legoi didn't really think that i'd be able to create anything like thatbut one of the things that we talked about for this set was doing somethingfun a little bit of nod to my past and so iwas just playing around with the bricks one dayand i created this little computer and then i gave it contextby putting uh nice list on it so that it felt like it belonged in the elves worldso this is what they they use to help santa uh monitoruh you know i guess yeah yeah exactly exactly so it was really fun toto get that into set and uh it seems like people really likeit as well so that's really rewarding and what would you say to to anybodythat hasn't built this uh like what words of advice would yougive to them and how would you want them to enjoy iti think it's it's a great set to sit down with your familyuh and and build it together so that's one thing i would recommenddoing in fact in our uh every set we includetwo sets of instructions one for these small builds and one for the houseitself so you you can actually sit down withanother person and both you will have an instruction uhbooklet and you can build together chrishere's the final question this is a really important question would yourather be an elf or a reindeer[Laughter] that is a tough question hmm i mean on one hand elves can holdwaffles okay i see you're weighing up the on theother hand a incredible next up let's find out aboutthe lego art marvel studios iron mans i know a lot more about the coliseum i'mbasically an expert which is lucky because next up we'regoing to head over to the historically hilariousred and blue at overly sarcastic productions hey party people i'm red i'mblue and we are so excited to be here todayyeah red and i are from the youtube channel overly sarcastic productionswhere we make videos on literature myths and history so when the fine folks atlego invited us in to give you some real world context for this build it was ano-brainer the roman coliseum is one of if not themost famous pieces of roman architecture and it really is awesome to see itgetting such a detailed and i'll be honest name deservingly massiveset yeah no kidding this bad boy is hefty soto peer into the backstory of this notorious monumentlet's do some history in the century following the reign of augustus theroman empire was having a pretty good time what with the vast riches rulingover most of the known world and not having to fight a civil war every 30minutes but life wasn't all shiny marble temples and perfectly paved roadsbecause some of the emperors were real pieces of worklike nero a self-obsessed tyrant and alleged pyromaniac who built a palace inthe middle of the city after a let's say conveniently located firecleared a spot for him but his lavish narcissism and wildunpopularity became an opportunity for the later emperor of espajian whodemolished nero's private palace and promised to replace it with somethingmeant for the roman public and in 72 ad construction began on a massiveamphitheater in the center of the city typically earlier greek theaters weresemi-circular and carved into the nearest available hillside but thisroman amphitheater was fully round and freestanding and bigman you really have to hand it to those roman architects boy do webut weirdly enough the name coliseum doesn't refer to the colossalness of thestadium but of a huge statue of nero left over from the demolished palacelater redecorated into a statue of the sun god heliosand while the current building is a little incomplete we can see from thesurviving outer wall that the romans spared no expense in ornamentationthe amphitheater had three stacked colonnades of the doric ionic andcorinthian styles in ascending order of fans but bluesurely they didn't just build this giant freestanding structure for funsies hadto have actually don e stuff with it righthonestly knowing the romans i wouldn't put it past them but you're right thisbuilding was quite the venue the flavian amphitheater as it was known in the dayplayed host to all kinds of events there were of course the flashygladiatorial matches that earned rome so much moral infamy but it also heldchariot races parades animal hunts reenactments of scenes frommythology and history and somehow entire naval battlesalways in pursuit of greater and greater spectacle the showrunners of thecoliseum could flood the arena and stage fights between tiny navies those gotmoved to a separate arena after domitian installed a maddeningly complexlabyrinth of machinery beneath the arena this hypogem was a network of tunnelsand some 60-some-odd lifts that allowed people animals and props to be raisedright up into the middle of the action in the event of a beast hunt the stagecrew could keep the hunter on their toes by releasing the next animalor three from anywhere in th e arena dramaand despite lacking a roof the top of the coliseum was no slouch for stagemechanics either as it had a series of retractable awnings to keep thespectators nicely shaded so uh what about that stuff i read onthe coliseum seeing some serious action as a venue for persecution byinvoluntary zoo as it happens yeah the thing with thelions was popularized during the renaissance but it's doubtful it everactually happened in fact that won't be the first timepeople misinterpreted the colosseum a millennium after the fall of the romanempire scholars assumed the building was originally a giant open-air temple to apagan sun god like a bigger ruthless versionof the pantheon it took a surprising amount of time forus to realize that the giant sporting venue was indeed a giant sporting venueafter the empire it obviously fell into disrepair but it was still in active useif not for its original intended purpose because later generations of romanswouldn't look at gift megastruct ure in the mouth it was retrofitted withapartments stalls for food vendors and tradespeople artisan workshops a churcha fortress briefly in the 1100s long story andmost consequentially it was used as a marble quarryin fairness to the medieval romans an earthquake in 1349 politely dismantledthe south wall for them so look what else are you gonna do with itbut this practice of reduce reuse ruin also applied to the bronze clamps thatoriginally held the stones together which later romans pried off and melteddown hence the speckled appearance today thecoliseum may well have become little more than a sketch in a history book ifnot for the preservation instincts of post-renaissance romans the colosseumwas ordained a holy site in 1749 and after italian unification in 1871rome began an extensive excavation and conservation program that continues totoday wow that is quite the lively history foran arena built as a glove slapped emperor neroit sure is and being a gorgeous piece of a rchitecture designed in service ofbrutal combat and lavish spectacle there really is no better icon for the romanempire and that's our quick look at the historyof the coliseum we hope this helps put some context behind the building and letyou better appreciate the design of this setthank you again to lego for having us on the stream like a world record yourselfyeah that's the magic o f being in the studio it looksabsolutely incredible man congratulations soso talk us through that final design that is it in all its gloryum you was definitely right in terms of the size of it it is it is hugeyes but you can still lift it up it takes a bit of effortand a bit of muscle power you've been doing those bicep curls rock it's allgood that six kg of lego brick right therebut the end result is sturdy enough so you can easily have it moved from oneend of the house to another it will look amazing on display or turnit around for your friends to appreciate it from all directionswe've really really brought out the different shapes and sizes goingfrom one side of the of the structure to the other and i'll be happy to talkto talk you through some of them yeah talk talk us through it man please doplease do this is this is your baby right thereit's my baby yes it is it weighs more than a babyit's a heavy baby but i'll be happy to share with you whatwas the main design co nsideration yeah during the build that is gettingthe full facade that's still left standing here[Music] and it's actually a showcase of thehistory of architecture of the roman empire which as you know has been takenover from the greeks so the building itself is constructed inthree levels which represent three different periodsthree different aesthetic periods in architecture so the first oneis the doric of columns and that is on the bottom level yes that's on thebottom level and you can see that the doric columns are represented by havinga lower base and the top is not as decorated that isthen followed by the second level which is ionic which has the volutesthose are the little curly pieces they look like thethe head of a ram yeah and we're capturing that detail with a rollerskate wow the columns themselves are constructed using a minifigure candlepiece that's been turned upside down and that allows us to give us a propercolumn that's incredible but then we're movingon from the second layer to the third which is the corinthian soit's a much more decorated column as you can see it hasit has more detail on the top on the top of the column itselfand then it's followed by the fourth one where we have the corinthian pilistersand this is really the detail that i wanted to capture this is what said thescale of the colosseum this is what set the height of the colosseum howproud do you feel seeing it in all its gloryyes i'm really proud that it turned out as well as it didbut as you can see we've spared no expansewe didn't skimp on the pieces so whatever we needed to get the correctamount of detail we were able to do and that's why alongthe way it made it into the biggest set of all timesand that's an incredible accolade uh rock who do you thinkthis set would appeal to who do you think would like it the mostoh i would like to think that it appeals to a wide variety of audiencesfirst and most foremost the architecture buffsthey would be thrille d to see the details that we managed to capture inthe lego build but then there's also people wholike to travel rome is an extremely popular destinationand exactly yeah getting to experience the colosseum isone of the highlights in one's life and having that in your own living roomfor all times to remember i also think it's a nicememory to have but then it's also the fans of legoi'm pretty sure that people would like to know how we've been able to pull offsuch a big build that has such an interesting geometry going on for it sothere's a lot of different interesting buildingtechniques of little things that are constructed innever before seen ways that would appeal to everybody who lovesa good challenge with their hands and minds speaking ofthose building techniques and the challenges if somebody wanted toreally challenge themselves with this what's the type of method they could dowhen building it well they can challenge themselves byhaving it built without mistakes to be gin withyeah i know that you think it's just following building instructionsbut it demands that it demands that you're presentit demands that you're mindfully concentrating on what you're doingbecause there's subtle differences in each of the cross of the cross sectionsthat you're building so it's never a boring buildeven though it might look that it's a bit repetitive on the outsideit's far from that as a building experience so it always challenges youin a different way but the great work that has been done inthe building structure is made sure that you can't get lost aseasily okay so that's the challenge from thelego designer himself to make sure that you uh try not to make any mistakesalong the way rock ii lost that challenge i lost thatchallenge immediately well the one that i would truly likepeople to embrace is to enjoy themselves is not to hurry with itbut to truly savor it to try to read on it during the build to get to knowthe original better together to know t he history of it a bitbetter and we've provided some of that in the building instructions that youcan follow along as you're going but there's so much more to discover nowright this is going to be such a difficult question for you to answerright but what are some of your favorite or like most interestingfeatures for you personally on the design oh i hope we have a lot oftime for that answer i'll be happy to spend the next say oh well as we can see it from this sideyou can see that the third oval was actuallydestroyed during earthquakes and other natural disasters through time but itwas also queried by the people of rome yeah so a lot of the palaces inrome are actually built by using the stones of the colosseum sothey've actually quarried that part and it's only later on that they'veadded the sides to stabilize it so that they've added the diagonal bracings hereright which we've captured properly in themodel so that the cross section of the building itselfactually corresp onds to the real one so that we have the different that wehave the correct amount of arches which represent different gang ways here up front you can actually see wherethe outer line of the colosseum would have been so we just have the basis ofthe columns that are standing that are remaininghere yeah because that part of the was this sureit's been quarried over the years yeah but what we can do is actually wecan look through all the arches we can lookthrough the archways and see the inside of the colosseumso we can actually see the perspective as you can see it on the originalso it allows you to peek through to look through the holesinto the majestic arena so really if you are placing it somewherein your house it's good to just turn it every now and then a bit like a mattressright i guess so yeah provide you with a freshview every time i love the way i've just i've justcompared this incredible lego build to a mattress uh we move wemove it is uh it's absolutely stunning s o it justmeans from every angle i think people are gonna have the challenge it'sgonna be a bit indecisive of like which angle to actually place itat well they can enjoy it from the top fromthe bird's eye view as well because they actually see that we'verecreated the interior to its fullest it actually has the correct amount ofribs the ribs that were supporting the supporting the seatsas you can see there are still places where the original concrete hasn't cavedin and we've captured that here so you canstill see the spectator stance yeah but in many other places theconcrete the roman concrete has caved in and you're just left with the ribs thatthey're supporting them and the lego model has the exact samenumber of rips as the original so it's 18in total i had to even with being the biggest lego model of all times i had toabstract it a bit so the colosseum actually hasexactly half the archways have the entrances that the original hadyeah so it's actually exaggerated in the verticaldirection because if you imagine tyler if you'reif you're looking to the other end of the studio or in your bedroomas where you are right now let's say that's 10 meters and that doesn't feellike much but when you're looking at 10 metersfrom the height that will give you a bit of vertigoright yeah absolutely absolutely and i'mscared of heights as well rock we can't be doing thatbecause we perceive vertical dimensions differently and i've took advantage ofthat in constructing the lego colosseum so i've actually made it taller i madeit twice as tall as it actually is in order to capturehow magnificent it is because when you're standing underneathit it looks tall with its 50 meters but in a lego model since you will bewatching it from above you wouldn't have that exact samefeeling of majesty if it would have been in a completely realscale of course so i've vertically exaggerated it thatallowed me first to have all the details on the facade aswell but in all in all it's just better inconveying the sheer size of it was there anythingthat that you was unable to do no no relief there was a challenge wewere able to tackle it that's it we've it's part of theterritory of being the biggest lego set everwe didn't have to cut corners that is amazingso thinking ahead now to the future i know you said you can't reveal anythingbut would you do something similar around like historicbuildings and or will it always be on a theme like in terms of your personaldesign of what you would like to do oh i would love to do a wide variety ofbuildings and historic ones are especially greatto tackle since they come with so much so many layers of history and meaningthat has been accrued on them during the years andcapturing a part of that in the lego set it'sit's what brings joy to me as well it's getting the extra meaningin it so that people know that they're doingthey're constructing more than just a plastic toythat they're getting to experience of part of historya part of our legacy yeah absolutely yeah it is heritage andand what's the bit that you're you're most proud ofwell i i'm proud of how it all came together yeah i'm proud of that it workstogether as a whole so that we have all the details on thefacade that's still standing we have all the details on the part ofthe ellipse which is which has been demolishedduring the years we have all the details inside of thearena we actually have the part of the arena that's been built in the 1990swhere the original floor of the arena was and we'reactually building it in order so that the last thing that the lastthing that you're putting down on a lego modelis actually the last thing that was built in the actual colosseumspeaking of those details though like the color scheme going on there thereare tons of the same color bricks is this gonna be like quite a challengefor for builders around the world no not at all that only appears so onthe surface because you have to imagine thatcoliseum as it is now it's weathered under 2000 years ofhot roman sun yeah and it would be quite monochrome if we would do it uhaccording to how it is in real life but we've actually been able to sneak inquite a bit of color so we have the dark 10going along the sand then as well and that helps with the shadow lineit provides extra details it gives you animpression of where there's extra detail because the darker color then representsshadows exactly we have touches of gray as wellwhich means that the certain elements are in certain colors which makes iteasier for you to find during the build itselfso a lot of attention has been put into making the building experience itselfpleasurable so that you never have to look for apiece or get frustrated by a repetition of ityou won't have that in the colosseum you'll actually be surprisedof how smoothly it can run architecturally i mean it is absolutelystunning but what is it about this design that makes it one ofthe new se ven wonders of the world well it's a wander in itself it's trulya magnificent piece of architecture because if you imagine today we'rebuilding stadiums just to have the maximum capacity butthey've actually built a monument to all timesthey were able to include all of their architectural styles in it to showcasethe progression of it this building was unprecedented in itsscale and scope until 20th century we hadn't hada building that would match it in sheer scale and size and the number of peopleit was able to host so it was a breathtaking achievementit was constructed with techniques that were actually lost for millenniayou have to imagine that the original colosseum actually had a retractableroof you can see it here we can see it on thelego model we still have the corbels these are the clips represented here andthis would this would support masts there would bemasts coming up here which would then supportlines that would support wires on which fabric was being strungwow and there was a team of sailors that wouldmend these masts and they would be able to make the roof retractable so thatthey would follow the sun so that they would shade the spectatorsso they don't need to be in the sun that's incredible sothe sheer the sheer numbers here are staggeringimagine a building that can host a hundred thousand people with aretractable roof and that has been done before there was ever any sort of amachine this has been handmade so it's truly a work of art and part ofthe human legacy it's truly a monument thatwe can be proud of in the entire world yeahabsolutely i mean i mean rook you must be very very proudof the design that you've made is if there's any like departing wordsto give to any of the lego fans listening in that are about to you knowembark on this set eventually what would those bewell i first of all ii really hope that you get to build ityeah because it's a quintessential lego setyou'll get to experience the best that lego has to of fer i'm hopingbut through it you'll actually being ableto savor the magnificence the meaning and the importance of the original aswell so that you'll get inspired by the great architecture thatthe romans were able to produce such a long time agoand that some of some of that achievement is thenactually being able to stand in your living roomis filling me up with great uh just really happy for it soyeah i'm hoping for many lovely builds it is going to be you know absolutely itis going to be um sensational to have these on display everywhere manum really well done you've done an amazing job with it thank you so muchuh for coming on the show as well i've got a lot of building to dorocks i'm about to go on a journey okay over here with this coliseumbut thank you so much and it was great meeting you man 98 lego theme adventurers and hetraveled all over the world and stole different artifacts with thisset what we've done is actually taken some artifacts from other old lego setsand put them in to his house it starts out as agothic style mansion and then the house alsounfolds so you can go inside and look at all the play features you can seethe haunted front doors that actually can openby themselves a spooky organ the ticket stand where you can buy ticketssome kind of strange altar in the attic who knows what it wasoriginally for we've included a lot of detail justaround the house as well to really bring that haunted mansionto life really make you feel like you're in this superspooky atmosphere one of the details that carl was really excited about is weused a little dark grey frog on the exterior to represent gargoylesand we got so many laughs when we were putting thaton the model it was really really just a fun little detail to put in therewe have a lot of builds that are taken and rebuilt from old lego sets we havethe head of the sphinx from one of the adventure sets we havethe obelisk from the adventure sets we have the heads of anubisagain for the adventure sets they have the orb of ogle fromthe alpha team sets there's even a cursedpainting that the baron had painted when he firstgot the rego ruby what i actually love about this setis right here the portrait of baron von baroni was so happy to be able to work on this because i was able to capture thislike evil iconic character in a haunted mansion it's amazing youcan see him holding the ruby that he stoleand then of course the secret behind it is that once you illuminate it you cansee the mummy's curse haunting him foreveri'm not sure what it is about baron juan baron that i loved so muchhe just always whenever i looked at that many of you look very handsome to mealso he's extremely evil which i sympathize with this set is filledwith a ton of minifigures you got two spooky ghoststwo spooky twins and the rest are attendants that love this ride andalso one skeleton for fun carl made sure that i did a ton of decorations for thisand one in particular that i like is this one which is a reference to frightnights you can see the numbers indicating oneof the set numbers but i'll let you look that up anddiscover it on yourself the elevator is actually a very interestingfunction to design to help work on this problem actually gotmike psyki to come in and help me there was actuallya lot of physics involved to get it to work correctly because what we needed todo was have this elevator drop and then slow down when itgot to the bottom of the tower so we built some flywheels into thetower that the elevator cart can transfer the energy tothe flywheels and then pass by those and the energystays in the flywheels and is no longer in the elevator cartand actually as part of the testing of the model wewe wanted to see okay how high can this tower be built and actually still workcarl was convinced it could go really high i think in the end we built onethat was two meters tall or something and it didn't work at all it kind ofworks but the he ight that we're at is reallyreally good a lot of stuff we do we do as a team but for this set it was reallyall working on at the same time so we'd have one of us working on one part ofoneness we're going to another part of it and then we get all togetherand work together it was really fun to work in this biggroup of designers we could really focus on our individual taskswe all have this kind of crazy obsession with this 1998 lego themeadventurers it had this hero johnny thunder and it was set in egypt andthere was a villain called baron von barrenand sam sinister and they were going about kind of chasing these egyptianrelics trying to find this ruby trying to avoid the cursed pharaoh wedid something called paired design which is something thatcarl and i have kind of made up i would be sitting at my computerworking on the model carl would just sit right behind meand almost just watch what i do and say don't use that brick use this oneinstead or oh i think you need to turn that or raise iti think it worked really well to to come to a really great result in the endone of the other new things i did with this process was actually bringmy eight-year-old son oliver to work and have him build some of the interiordetails the stuff i made in the haunted housewas a skeleton hanging from its feet a snakeunder a table in the attic a barrel next to the organand a pumpkin in the front yard the way that this set ended after thiswhole design process is beyond a dream this is i neverimagined that we would be able to do something that had so many different funfeatures and functions and details and it's just it's beyond what i could havedreamed of
